Safety Regulations Physics Laboratories

As a commitment to laboratory quality and safety, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at the University of Lampung refers to and gradually implements several ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards relevant to laboratory safety and quality management, including:

  1. ISO 12100Safety of machinery – General principles for design – Risk assessment and risk reduction, as a reference in the design and risk assessment of laboratory equipment.
  2. ISO 13850Safety of machinery – Emergency stop function, ensuring the availability and effectiveness of emergency shutdown systems on laboratory equipment.
  3. ISO 13857Safety of machinery – Safety distances to prevent hazard zones,ensuring protection of the danger zone around machinery or equipment that could potentially pose a risk.
  4. ISO 14644Cleanrooms and associated controlled environments, regulating the design, operation, ventilation system, and air conditioning of the laboratory to meet hygiene and safety standards.
  5. ISO/IEC 17025General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, as a standard for technical competence and quality management systems for testing and calibration laboratories.
  6. ISO 9001Quality Management Systems, as a basis for ensuring that laboratory work processes are consistent, well documented, and focused on user satisfaction.

These standards help ensure that all laboratories within the faculty operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with international standards, thereby supporting a work culture that is oriented towards safety and sustainable quality.

The University of Lampung currently holds ISO/IEC 17025 (Link) certification, which serves as an umbrella for the implementation of quality management systems across all faculties, including in the area of laboratory management.

As the faculty leadership’s commitment to “strict compliance with international safety regulations in all laboratories”, the supporting documents available consist of:

  1. Letter of commitment from faculty leaders regarding the implementation of safety regulations in all laboratories (link);
  2. ISO documents and certificates held by the university/faculty (Link);
  3. UPPE is committed to creating a safe and comfortable learning environment by implementing international laboratory safety standards in every practicum. All electrical installations are guaranteed to meet safety standards, and UPPE usage and emergency facilities are provided. Therefore, laboratories at UPPE are equipped with safety equipment. As part of this commitment, UPPE has implemented and continues to improve safety facilities and infrastructure in all laboratories. All laboratory users are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, masks, and face shields. The use of PPE is mandatory and strictly monitored by technicians and faculty members responsible for the laboratory.

Figure. Addition and Standardization of UPPE

The electrical infrastructure in the UPPE laboratory has been carefully designed to ensure a stable and safe power supply. A vital component of our system is the installation of overvoltage protectors. These protective devices serve as the first line of defense to protect all sensitive and valuable laboratory equipment from the risk of damage due to unexpected power surges or voltage fluctuations.

With this protection system in place, we ensure that:

  1. Laboratory Equipment is Protected: Analytical instruments and other electronic devices are safe from damage caused by electrical disturbances.
  2. User Safety is Guaranteed: All researchers, staff, and students are protected from potential electrical hazards.
  3. Research Continuity is Guaranteed: A stable and safe power supply minimizes the risk of experiment failure due to electrical problems.

With a well-designed and protected electrical installation, the UPPE Laboratory has cemented its position as a research facility that is not only technologically advanced, but also prioritizes the highest safety standards.

With this step, laboratories are now more complete and safer, and in accordance with global standards, while supporting the fulfillment of international accreditation such as ASIIN.
